Rock Climbers Travel to Peru
Rock climbing is a relatively new sport in Peru, but it is gaining in popularity with locals and tourists who travel to Peru. Huaraz is the most famous outdoor rock climbing destination, but there are also many areas close to Lima that are fairly unknown. There is a dedicated group of local climbers who have been devoted to developing these outdoor climbing areas over the last decade, and their work has paid off.
An excellent option to start out with close to Lima is called Base Camp Peru. It is a small, inexpensive climbing gym in Miraflores, open year-round for both adults and children. Then there are three main outdoor climbing areas close to Lima that can be accessed as a day trip. Las Vinas in La Molina is the closest, followed by Canchacaya and La Escuala in Chosica, both of which are within 1 ½ hours by car.
